Sam

You may remember Sam from a couple of months ago.ย  He was signed over to our care with two of his litter mates, Able and Frank.ย  They had been the result of an unplanned litter and the owner was just unable to provide them with what they all needed.

Prior to coming into our care, Sam and his siblings had never left their house and yard.ย  They had never stepped out into the big wide world and as a result, we welcomed 3 very scared, anxious and unsocialised puppies into our fold. ๐Ÿ˜”

Sam, Frank and Able all found new homes not too long after arriving but sadly, after some time in his home, it was realised that Sam’s needs were much greater than initially anticipated and we are now trying to look for a home that will be better suited for him.ย  His current owners are reluctant to part with him as they have understandably developed a bond with him, but after much discussion, we are all in agreement that their living situation and what they can provide him is not going to be the most beneficial to him becoming a well rounded adult dog.

Sam’s current owner has given us some additional information about Sam so that we can help find him the right home. ๐Ÿ’™

Sam is a sweet boy who takes treats gently.

He can be nervous of new people and will bark at new visitors to the house but he does like cuddles and fusses with trusted people. ๐Ÿ˜Š

He likes playing fetch and running around in secure fields and he loves treats and chews. ๐Ÿฆด

Heโ€™s smart and learns things quickly. – he has learned โ€˜waitโ€™ and โ€˜sitโ€™ and is now fully house trained. ๐Ÿ˜€

Sam is very nervous of leaving the house for a walk and struggles to go at all unless their other dog is with him. This isn’t helped by the location of his home as it is on a very busy, noisy route that is regularly used by traffic and dog walkers making going outside very overwhelming and anxiety provoking for Sam the second he steps out of the front door.ย  He will need to live in a quieter area where he can get used to going outdoors without being too over stimulated and overwhelmed.

He is frightened of other unknown dogs and has started showing signs of being reactive towards them.ย  We believe this is coming from a place of fear and lack of confidence and this is something that a new owner will need to feel confident in and who has the time to spend working on improving this.

When introduced gradually, Sam has mixed with other dogs and has been living with an older, smaller dog.ย  However their older dog has not enjoyed Sam’s energy levels and he therefore may be better suited to living with a younger dog who can match his energy.ย  We feel he may be better suited to live with a confident, similar sized female. ๐Ÿถ

Sam has struggled with being left and his owners have been working on him not following people as they leave rooms to get used to small periods of being on his own.

Sam has struggled with the noise and unpredictable nature of the child in his current home and he would definitely be better suited to a calmer, quieter home with no young children.

He is currently at a stage in his development where he is going through his second fear period (6-14 months of age) which is when dogs naturally develop their ‘fight or flight’ instincts.ย  This is a difficult time when dogs may suddenly become fearful or reactive to things that they previously weren’t.ย  Because of this, we are looking for an experienced home for Sam and we won’t be rehoming him to first time dog owners.

We are trying to find Sam a home without him having to come back into kennels as we worry this may be even more detrimental to him and we don’t want to cause him any unnecessary stress. ๐Ÿ˜”

We think that in the right home, Sam will have the opportunity to grow into a calm, more confident young chap. ๐Ÿ’™
